Summary:
The SCM50 is awesome. I starting to know why people like it. Guess I have never own anything before that has more than 6" woofer.

At first I conntected with L/R reversed, and I was wondering why it sounded so bad!

Anyway, to summarize what SCM50 is about, it's like you driving the BMW Z8. Unlimited volume, power, and punch! But with the tansparency, soundstage, control, and see-thru realism. It can play so loud, it will scare the neighbour's cat to death!

It sounds expensive, but consider that it combines the speakers with power-amp built-in, the total package price is more than fair.

I do feel the SCM50SL passive with an appropriately good power amp may sound better than SCM50ASL, but the price will be a lot higher. Not talking about cheap Hafler, but something like high-end ML, Krell etc.

Strengths:
Accurate, big soundstage, realistic dynamic. Built-in power amp and active crossover.

Weaknesses:
Heavy. Not the best looking speakers to look at. The grille obstructs the sound.

Summary:
These are expensive in absolute terms, but given that they include 6 power amplifiers and the legendary ATC drive units, I think they are unsurpassed in terms of high-end value for money. They sound open, very detailed and dynamic. ATC are renowned for high max spls - I listen to mine at quite low spls, and they are tremendous. Well worth seeking out.
If anyone else uses them, please get in touch: I am still trying to get the positioning right.

Salman
